In the summer of 2027, in connection with the bicentenary of photography, La Piscine welcomes artist Thomas Devaux for a carte blanche to young contemporary creation. Born in the North in Marcq-en-Barœul, the photographer who now lives and works in Paris, defines himself as a visual photographer. In his work, photography creates confusion about its true nature, sometimes to the point of merging with an abstract painting, a design object, or even a minimal art installation. The photographic image thus blurs the markers and is located at the edge of different arts. His works will therefore find a natural place at the Musée d'art et d'industrie de Roubaix which, since its opening in 2001, has not ceased, through its collections and programming, to question the hierarchies between the arts.
Reflection, mirror and light are also at the heart of the artist’s work, who pursues a research on the profane and the sacred in the era of consumer society. For several years, he has transfigured his photographs by mixing them with dichroic glass. Using light as an artistic material in its own right, the works within the museum will interact with the reflections and glass windows of the pool as well as with the collections, in a new installation at the heart of the old swimming pool and within the permanent exhibition.
