Self-guided tour of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de la Treille

  • Visite - Balade

Come and (re)discover the Lille Cathedral, a skillful mix of neogothic, art nouveau and contemporary art styles.
A neat signage and heritage space with a model accompanied by its chronological timeline will allow you to discover its rich and eventful history.
Crazy dream, the cathedral of Lille was born in the spirit of rich industrialists from the 19th century who entrusted the project to the architect Charles LEROY.
They wanted at that time to build the most beautiful and perfect church in the Gothic style of the 13th century, in order to house the ancient statue of Our Lady of the Treille, benevolent patron of the city since its origins. The first stone was blessed on 1 July 1854. The last one was sealed in 1999.
Long-term project, the "Treille" as it is called, is from this point of view in line with its elders. The construction, largely carried by the eminent figure of Cardinal LIENART, knows vicissitudes requiring compromises and renunciations.
Last cathedral of the twentieth century, fruit of traditional techniques and avant-garde technologies, it houses a lively and prayerful community. Church mother of a young diocese, sanctuary and basilica, the Cathedral Notre-Dame de la Treille welcomes the great moments of the life of the Northern Church, but also major cultural events, as well as the prayer of the simple passer by.
