In 1848, a group of British artists, the Pre-Raphaelites, broke with the codes of Victorian England and denounced an art that they considered corrupted since Raphael. Their rejection of academic art and their quest for sincerity, sometimes considered naive, arouses passionate debates.
For a long time, the history of the Pre-Raphaelites was written in masculine form around its heroes John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. But recent research reveals the central and ongoing role of women within the brotherhood. The exhibition aims to retrace how these women artists seized the movement, while the status of women in Britain is changing.
