Flemish and Dutch painting of the seventeenth century is full of scenes where foods (cheeses, herrings, lemons, lobsters etc.), abundantly arranged on sumptuous tables, attract the eye. But what do these meticulously represented dishes really reveal? Behind their seductive appearance is often concealed a double language: on the one hand, a moral message about the vanity of earthly pleasures, and on the other hand, an erotic and sexual symbolism that knowledgeable viewers of the time knew how to decipher without difficulty.
