How are contemporary artists responding to the climate crisis through moving images and time-based media? During this lecture, writer and curator Filipa Ramos will explore pioneering ecological approaches developed by artists from different generations and cultural backgrounds, examining how film, video, performance and installation address environmental transformations through duration, rhythm, movement and non-linear experiences of time. The lecture explores the relationship between ecology as a subject and ecology as an artistic practice, questioning how the temporal and material qualities of moving-image works can foster alternative ways of perceiving the living world and engaging with it. It also examines the environmental responsibilities associated with the production, presentation and distribution of these works, as well as the role that artists, art schools and cultural institutions can play in developing more environmentally responsible practices.
