Couples of artists: stories of art and love by Stéphanie Antona
Conference proposed by the Friends of LaM
Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo or Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle have marked the history of art as much by their talents as by the couples they formed in the private circle. These lives combining art and love, creation and passion, joy and suffering, have also inspired writers and filmmakers whose works may have fed some form of fantasy around these artist duos. This conference will aim to untangle the true from the false and to question the impact of romantic relationships, happy or tumultuous, on creation. Within these pairs of artists, was the artistic influence one-way or reciprocal? Did each partner seek to preserve their creative singularity or was there a true quest for artistic communion?
