When James Reese Europe and the Harlems Hellfighters, an American unit exclusively composed of black soldiers who came to fight in Europe, land in Brest in 1917, everyone is far from imagining that they bring in their cases the beginnings of music that will revolutionize the 20th century. Almost 30 years after this memorable episode, it is in the GI’s packaging in the form of Victory discs that jazz will return to France.
