🎬 Cinema debate — two prosecutors (Sergei Loznitsa)
📅 Monday, May 18·, 7:30 pm
The Kino-Ciné launches Ciné Justice – the Bar on Screen, a new cycle of cinema debates designed to bring about dialog between cinema, justice and public debate, in partnership with the Syndicat de la Magistrature de Douai and SAF de Lille.
For this first evening, the Kino-Ciné will screen two prosecutors by Sergei Loznitsa, a major political film presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 and rewarded with the François Chalais Prize.
In the USSR, in 1937, at the heart of the great Stalinist purges, a letter from a wrongly accused detainee reached a young prosecutor, Alexander Kornev. Convinced that he can still enforce the law, he engages in a quest for justice that leads him to the center of a judicial machine already subjected to fear, bureaucracy and pressure from power.
With its austere staging, its fixed shots, its oppressive atmosphere and its power of reflection, two prosecutors stand out as a rare film: An intense work of cinema, but also an experience that questions frontally what becomes of justice when it is placed under political pressure. The film follows an idealistic young magistrate confronted with a system that preserves the appearance of legality while crushing individuals.
With Ciné Justice – the Bar on Screen, Kino-Ciné wants to open a space of exchange accessible to the judiciary, lawyers·, lawyers, students·and all those who want to think about justice differently. A new proposal in Lille, at the crossroads of culture, law and major contemporary issues.
For this inaugural session, a question will cross the projection and the debate: What happens to justice under political pressure?
