🎬 Film club—Guns, samurai & yakuza
📅 From June 10 to 30
Three films, three Japanese cinema dumps: a samurai movie propelled into the apocalypse, a high school girl projected as the head of a yakuza clan, and a professional killer lost in a pop nightmare.
With Flingues, samouraïs & yakuzas, the Japanese Film Club invites you to explore an explosive, stylized and totally unpredictable facet of Japanese genre cinema. Here, the codes of the sword film, the detective novel, the yakuza eiga and the B series meet, collide and derail in a grand gesture of popular cinema.
In The Warriors of the Apocalypse by Kosei Saito, modern soldiers find themselves thrown into the middle of the samurai era: clash of eras, spectacular fights and war fever on the program.
With Shinji Sōmai’s Sailor Suit and the Machine Gun, the yakuza film takes a pop and melancholic turn: a high school student inherits a clan against her wishes and discovers a world of violence, loyalty and absurdity.
Finally, Seijun Suzuki’s The Mark of the Killer pushes the Japanese detective novel to the point of hallucination: hired killers, obsession, electric staging and crazy modernity.
Between automatic weapons, sabres, criminal clans and unlikely heroines, this cycle celebrates a free Japanese cinema, excessive, elegant and indomitable. Three cult films to discover a cinematic Japan where violence becomes choreography, where the genre explodes its own rules, and where each screening promises a unique experience on the big screen.
A rendezvous for lovers of Japanese cinema, stylized thrillers, sword films and cult gems to see—or watch again—in theaters.
